Summer is in full swing. Here at On Track Wellness, we notice it in a variety of ways, from the dojo being extra hot and sweaty throughout the heat wave, to some classes turning into private lessons for the one (lucky!) student who shows up that day. Some of the teen and adult classes have had exclusively black belt attendance, while lots of fun and learning have taken place in our summer camps.
Two summer camps have been completed so far, and one more is coming up August 3–7.
Camp activities have ranged from karate to origami, from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to henna, and of course keeping up with the Soccer World Cup. One highlight this summer has been seeing a number of our teenage students step in to help during camp. It's been really great to watch them take on the responsibility of leading younger kids in activities, games, and even assisting with classes.
It's one of those things that's easy to miss if you only think of martial arts as learning punches and kicks. Over time, students begin to grow into leaders. They gain confidence, learn responsibility, and become role models for those coming behind them. Watching that happen has been one of the best parts of this summer.
We've also loved seeing campers bring friends along to join the fun. Whether someone comes through our doors for a summer camp, a martial arts class, or one of our fitness programs, it's always exciting to welcome someone who's trying something new.
With one more camp coming up, it's also a great opportunity for children to get back on the mat, refocus their training, and head into the new school year with one healthy activity already built into their routine.
That idea doesn't just apply to kids.
At the beginning of the year, we shared a blog about giving yourself a grace period with your New Year's resolutions. Instead of expecting yourself to go from zero to one hundred overnight, we encouraged building consistency first.
The same idea applies here.
As summer moves into its second half, we've passed the halfway point of the year. A new school year is approaching, and it's a natural time to ease back into routines instead of waiting until life feels less busy, which, if we're honest, rarely happens.
For children, our final camp of the summer is a fun way to return to training before school starts.
For teens and adults, maybe your routine has looked different over the past few months. Maybe you've travelled, worked extra-long hours, been deep in study mode, or simply spent more evenings at the beach. Whatever your summer has looked like, there's something refreshing about returning to a routine that challenges you physically, mentally, and personally.
A new school year has always felt like a fresh start, even for those of us who haven't been in school for years. It's a chance to reset, establish healthy routines, set new goals, and invest in the things that help us grow.
This month's Word of the Month at OTW is Pride, and Sensei Eric recently shared that "healthy pride isn't about being better than someone else; it's about recognizing the value of hard work, perseverance, and continuous personal growth."
I think that's exactly what a head start is about. It's not about getting ahead of someone else. It's about giving yourself the opportunity to build habits you're proud of before life gets busy again. Whether that's returning to training after a summer away, helping lead younger students at camp, earning your next belt, or simply showing up consistently each week, those are all things worth taking pride in.
Whether you're already part of the OTW family or you've been thinking about trying martial arts for the first time, we hope this season is one of growth, new routines, and fresh starts.
Here's to a great finish to the summer and an even better start to the school year.
